Misdiagnosis of early dementia dangerous

Early onset dementia in patients aged 65 and below is often misdiagnosed as mental illness or stress resulting in inadequate care. Particular types of dementias, which present with social withdrawal, reduced interest and initiative are most likely to result in delayed diagnosis. These patients respond to antidepressant treatment but often fail to return to normal functioning.
